Two British teenagers have died and a third is fighting for his life after their parachute rope snapped in a parasailing accident in Greece.

The two cousins, a 13-year-old boy and a 15-year-old girl, were holidaying in Rhodes with the boy’s brother when the rope snapped, causing them to fall from an ‘extreme’ height and crash into rocks in high winds.

The two fatally-injured youngsters ‘were found dead on the rocks near the city of Lindos in Rhodes,’ the Greek coast guard announced.

The third boy, 15, suffered multiple injuries and is in a coma on a critical care ward, while the captain and co-captain of the boat they were sailing behind have been arrested.

The three adolescents were hanging onto a parachute and being towed by a boat when the accident happened at around noon on Wednesday.

The two teenagers were killed when the high winds swept them towards the rocks and they fell on a craggy spot at Cape Gina, Greek media says.

An investigation is ongoing but eyewitness accounts say the teenagers had fallen onto the rocks from an altitude of about 400ft.

The usual safety limit on most Greek islands is 300ft.

The bodies of the youngsters were found by the Coast Guard and fire department, who were called by the person steering the boat.

A Coast Guard spokesman said: ‘The guy who controlled the speedboat and another person were arrested.’

The spokesman added: ‘The boy and the girl were killed and another was heavily injured and brought to hospital. It is under investigation about how the rope was cut.’

One of the two brothers and his female cousin were declared dead at the State Hospital of Rhodes.

The other brother was transported to the hospital, placed into a medically-induced coma and treated in the hospital’s critical care unit, for multiple injuries.

Τhe siblings and their cousin had arrived to the island  with their family a few days ago and were staying in Pefki resort.

Authorities have opened a probe into the causes of the accident.

The UK Foreign Office confirmed it had been liaising with the family of the teenagers.

A FCDO spokesman said: ‘We are supporting the family of two British people following their death in Rhodes, and are in contact with the Greek authorities.’
