Browns coach Kevin Stefanski sticking with $230M Deshaun Watson despite another ugly loss

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski placed some of the blame on himself after getting blown out by the Commanders, 34-13, on Sunday.

Despite another week of Cleveland quarterback Deshaun Watson failing to control the offense, Stefanski said he won’t make a change under center at this time.

“We’re not changing quarterbacks,” he told reporters after the game. “We need to play better.

“I need to coach better and that’s really what it is.”

It came after Stefanski seemed frustrated with Watson — who signed a five-year, $230 million contract with Cleveland after they traded for him in 2022 — when the quarterback walked off of the field in the third quarter.

Stefanski wanted to go for it on fourth-and-goal, according to the Fox Sports broadcast, but Watson walked over to the sideline as the clock continued.

Stefanski ripped off his headset and had a confused reaction when he saw Watson walking off the field.

“Oh my God, Kevin Stefanski has got to be sick,” Greg Olsen, who was on the call, said.

The Browns offense didn’t reach the end zone until the fourth quarter, while Washington scored 24 points in the first half.

Watson completed 15 of 28 passes for just 125 yards and one touchdown, and he was sacked seven times.

The three-time Pro Bowl quarterback has yet to play at the level he did with the Texans.

After the game, Watson told reporters that “time is clicking,” and the team needs to find a rhythm and figure things out quickly.

“We just gotta continue to take what the defense gives us at the end of the day,” Watson said when asked what he thinks about Stefanski’s confidence in him and the decision to stick with him at the quarterback position.

“I’m rocking with whatever coach’s decision is. Like I said, we don’t listen to the outside world, regardless of what it is. So, you know, that’s all I can do is worry about what I can control.”

Watson went on to explain that the Browns need reps and to figure out what they’re really good at and perfect it.

The Browns (1-4) face the Eagles (2-2) at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia on Oct. 13.
