GOP mayoral nominee Curtis Sliwa seized on renewed reports that his Democratic challenger Eric Adams may not live in the Brooklyn brownstone he calls home — but actually resides in a New Jersey apartment he owns with a girlfriend — by visiting his opponent’s Fort Lee co-op Tuesday.
“Where is Adams hiding?” asked a sign that Sliwa carried as he walked across the George Washington Bridge from Manhattan to Adams’ Garden State property.
Sliwa, the Guardian Angel founder who’s well-known for publicity stunts, also carried a milk carton with Adams’ face on the box, suggesting the outgoing Brooklyn borough president is missing.
“The question is where does he live and that’s not established,” Sliwa said outside the Palisades Avenue complex.
“That is still in limbo all these months. I don’t know why he is so evasive about it. It needs to be established. That’s what you want from a potential mayor– transparency,” Sliwa said.
Sliwa was referring to the fact that Adams didn’t respond to a Department of Buildings complaint about an illegal conversion at his Bedford Stuyvesant townhouse and failed to list the property as his primary residence on federal tax filings.
Adams insists he spends most nights at the Brooklyn property, but visits his significant other at the Fort Lee apartment they co-own on weekends.
Adams said Monday that he had not noticed the DOB complaint plastered to his Brooklyn door because mail often gets mixed up with a neighboring address. As for the tax filings, he said the errors were made by his former accountant who is now homeless.
Still, residents at the Fort Lee apartment building told The Post that Adams is not there very often.
“He doesn’t live here. I know. I live here. His girl lives here. He lives in Brooklyn,” Bruce Bernfeld, 74, a retired health care executive said.
“He co-owns an apartment with his girlfriend,” another resident said.
“He is not here most of the time. This is not his primary residency, absolutely not,” the resident added.
Evan Thies, a spokesman for Adams, said Sliwa should be focused on more substantive matters.
“Instead of searching for cheap headlines, Sliwa should be searching for serious answers to solving the city’s serious problems. Thousands of New Yorkers are searching for affordable homes, yet Curtis Sliwa is wasting everyone’s time,” Thies said.
