New details have emerged surrounding Diane Keatonâs tragic death at age 79 on Oct. 11.
On Wednesday, the late starâs family revealed she died of pneumonia in a statement to People.
Primary bacterial pneumonia is listed as Keatonâs immediate cause of death, according to a death certificate obtained by People on Thursday. She had it for days before her death.
The document lists no other significant contributing conditions, but notes Keaton would be cremated.
âThe Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,â Keatonâs relatives shared with the outlet on Wednesday.
âShe loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her,â they added.
After Keatonâs passing, a friend shared that her health had âdeclined very suddenlyâ in the final months of her life.
âIt was so unexpected,â the pal expressed to People, âespecially for someone with such strength and spirit.â
They noted that Keatonâs health crisis âwas heartbreaking for everyone who loved her.â
âIn her final months, she was surrounded only by her closest family, who chose to keep things very private,â the friend continued. âEven longtime friends werenât fully aware of what was happening.â
Another close friend of Keatonâs, songwriter Carole Bayer Sager, revealed that Keaton âlost so much weightâ before her death.
âI saw her two or three weeks ago, and she was very thin,â Sager, 81, told People on Sunday. âI was kind of stunned by how much weight sheâd lost.â
Meanwhile, one of Keatonâs film executive friends told the outlet that Keaton âwas funny right up until the end.â
âShe lived exactly how she wanted to, which was on her own terms, surrounded by the people and things she really loved,â they recalled, before mentioning that Keaton âkept a close circle and she liked it that wayâ in the final years of her life.
The Hollywood vet did not publicly disclose that she was battling any illness. She previously beat two bouts of skin cancer and overcame an eating disorder.
Keatonâs last social media post was on April 11, with the âFather of the Brideâ star sharing a photo of her golden retriever, Reggie. She had not been seen publicly in six months.
Despite never being married, Keaton had two children, daughter Dexter, 29, and son Duke, 25, whom she adopted after turning 50.
âI didnât think that I was ever going to be prepared to be a mother,â she previously told Ladiesâ Home Journal. âMotherhood was not an urge I couldnât resist. It was more like a thought Iâd been thinking for a very long time. So I plunged in.â
At her Hand & Footprint Ceremony in 2022, Keaton said that her son and daughter âhave no interest in what I do, which I think is very healthy.â
âWe live a relatively normal â well, sort of normal â life.â
Following her passing, many celebs paid tribute to the beloved actress.
âThey just are never going to have another person on earth like her,â Patricia Arquette told The Post.
Arquette, 57, starred in the 1991 TV movie âWildflower,â which Keaton directed. Beau Bridges and Reese Witherspoon also co-starred.Â
The âSeveranceâ star remembered Keaton as being an âartistâ from everything including her, âvisuals, design, writing, directing.â She also noted the way that Keaton âperceived the worldâ and âher generosity of spirit.âÂ
Keaton also directed Arquette in the 1990 after-school special, âGirl with the Crazy Brother.âÂ
âAnd I was very young and starting out, and Iâd be nervousâ she reminisced, adding that she had âthis big crying sceneâ at the time.
âAnd I have to do it in front of Diane Keaton! I mean, that was probably the scariest thing on Earth,â she said.
Keaton âwould come up to me before a take, and just put her hand on my back, and I just felt infused by her support. She just was so in [the moment] with me.â
Noting about her personal life, Arquette gushed that â[Diane] loved being a mom. She really, really love that.â
