President Donald Trump will attend Defense Secretary Pete Hegsethās large gathering of top U.S. military officials in Virginia this week.
The president classified the meeting to NBC News as just a āvery nice meeting talking about how well weāre doing militarily, talking about being in great shape, talking about a lot of good, positive things.ā
āWe have some great people coming in, and itās just an esprit de corps. You know the expression āesprit de corps?āā TrumpĀ saidĀ in a phone interview. āThatās all itās about. Weāre talking about what weāre doing, what theyāre doing, and how weāre doing.ā
As Breitbart News reported last week,Ā Hegseth ordered hundreds of U.S. military leaders, including generals and admirals, to gather on short notice this coming Tuesday at a U.S. Marine Corps base in Quantico, Virginia. According to theĀ Washington Post, the directiveĀ includedĀ āvirtually all of the militaryās top commanders worldwide.ā Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed to theĀ PostĀ that Hegseth āwill be addressing his senior military leaders early next week,ā while offering no further details. He also expressed no concerns about the meeting.
āThere are about 800 generals and admirals spread across the United States and dozens of other countries and time zones,ā noted theĀ Post. Hegsethās order ā¦ applies to all senior officers with the rank of brigadier general or above, or their Navy equivalent, serving in command positions and their top enlisted advisers.ā
āTop commanders in conflict zones and senior military leaders stationed throughout Europe, the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region are among those expected to attend Hegsethās meeting, said people familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to publicly discuss the issue,ā the outlet added.
One source said military officials could not recall seeing such an order previously, sparking concern.
āPeople are very concerned. They have no idea what it means,ā one source told theĀ Post.
Both President Trump and Vice President JD Vance have dismissed those concerns.
āItās actually not unusual at all, and I think itās odd that you guys have made it into such a big story,ā Vance told reporters.
