Paul Burrell reveals I’m A Celeb saved his life as show’s medical checks led to his early prostate cancer diagnosis

Paul Burrell has revealed his appearance on I’m A Celebrity saved his life because the show’s medics discovered his prostate cancer.

The former royal butler, 67, first appeared on the ITV show in 2004 before returning for the All Stars season in 2023.

While taking a medical to appear on the show, doctors found he had a raised PSA (prostate-specific antigen) level, which can indicate cancer.

After he was eliminated, the father-of-two went for an MRI scan and a biopsy, which discovered he had the illness.

‘I have a lot to thank I’m A Celebrity for and ITV because that show saved my life, literally,’ Paul told Christine Lampard on Loose Women today.

Appearing from his home in Cheshire, in front of a framed picture of him beside Princess Diana, he added: ‘When I went to the medical before I went to the All Stars, I found that I had prostate cancer.

When I came back, I got it sorted and I’m fine because that was an early diagnosis, so thank you, I’m A Celebrity and thank you ITV.’

In November 2023, Paul revealed that he had been given the ‘all clear’ from medics and said he had completed his radiotherapy treatment.

He added he was looking forward to ‘watching Ant and Dec torture celebrities’ in the latest series, which airs on Sunday.

‘This year’s line-up is incredible, I think Ruby Wax is going to be explosive and funny, I love it,’ Paul said.

He also anticipated that sports presenter Alex Scott would ‘do well’ because former footballer Jill Scott was crowned Queen of the Jungle in 2022.

‘She is determined, she’s competitive, she’s disciplined, and that’s what you need in the jungle,’ he added.

Paul has starred on I’m A Celebrity three times, originally going on the show in 2004, before joining the Australian version in 2018 and appearing on All Stars in 2023.

During his debut on the programme more than two decades ago, Paul famously clashed with Janet Street-Porter.

‘She was always going on at me, saying, “Paul, all you’re good for is picking up Corgi poo.” I had run-ins with her, but her bark is worse than her bite,’ he said.

He then whipped out a framed picture of the 2004 I’m A Celebrity cast before adding: ‘I look at her most days and think, “Oh, didn’t we have fun, Janet?”‘

His biggest advice to those going on the show was to be themselves, saying that people cannot ‘act it’.

‘It’s a magical time and you’ll never forget it,’ he added. ‘You’re getting paid for doing it too, so have a good time.’
